Hogs Wild – Fighting the Feral Pig Problem – Texas Parks and Wildlife [Official]

>>OKAY… LET’S GO….>>IT’S ROUNDUP TIME AT KERR WILDLIFE MANAGEMENT AREA…>>OKAY, SHHHH.>>…NOT FOR CATTLE, BUT FOR TRAPPED FERAL PIGS.>>LET ‘EM FIND THE HOLE.>>HOLD BACK A LITTLE BIT, JUST HOLD BACK. (pig grunts) EVEN THOUGH WE’RE WILDLIFE BIOLOGISTS AND TECHNICIANS, THIS IS NEW FOR US. WE’RE LEARNING A LOT FROM THESE PIGS ON HOW TO HANDLE THEM… …AND WE’RE ALWAYS UPGRADING OUR FACILITIES.>>WHILE THESE ANIMALS HAVE DESCENDED FROM DOMESTIC LIVESTOCK, TODAY THEY ARE COMPLETELY WILD, WHICH CAN MAKE THEM A LITTLE DANGEROUS. (crash)>>THEY ALMOST ALWAYS TRY TO GET AWAY FROM US, HOWEVER, THEY CERTAINLY CAN HURT YOU IF THEY DID CHARGE YOU. WE CAN BOTH GO IN IF YOU WANT.>>YEAH, LET’S GO IN.>>CORRALLING WILD PIGS IS A RISKY AND INEXACT SCIENCE…>>NOTICE HOW CLOSE WE STAY TO THESE FENCE POLES.>>…BUT THE SCIENCE OF FERAL PIG CONTROL IS WHAT BRINGS JUSTIN FOSTER AND CREW HERE.>>THE RESEARCH THAT WE ARE CONDUCTING HERE IS AN INVESTIGATION OF SOME PIG TOXICANTS FOR WILD PIGS, FERAL HOGS.>>A TOXIC BAIT, SUCCESSFULLY TESTED, COULD HELP KEEP FERAL PIG POPULATIONS IN CHECK…>>HEPPA! HEPPA! BETTER FIND A TREE! (laughs) IT WOULD CERTAINLY APPEAR THERE IS EXPONENTIAL GROWTH GOING ON.>>…THE FACT THAT A HUMANE PIG PESTICIDE IS EVEN BEING EXPLORED IS A MEASURE OF THE PROBLEMS THESE ANIMALS POSE, ECONOMICALLY AND ECOLOGICALLY.>>HERE THEY GO, GOING INTO THE GATE.>>CLOSE IT! (pig charges into fence)>>WHEW!>>ALRIGHT.>>FERAL HOGS HAVE PROVEN TO BE A MAJOR PROBLEM THROUGHOUT TEXAS. YEARS AGO, FERAL HOGS WERE MAINLY IN SOUTH TEXAS, ALONG THE COAST AND IN EAST TEXAS, BUT THEY’RE BASICALLY ALL ACROSS THE STATE NOW. (pig grunts)>>TEXAS DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE ESTIMATES THAT PIGS PRODUCE $52 MILLION A YEAR IN AGRICULTURAL DAMAGE ALONE. THOSE ESTIMATES GO WAY HIGHER THAN THAT WHENEVER WE START TALKING ABOUT ALL THE DAMAGE THAT IS INCURRED ANNUALLY. THE IMPACT IS VERY SIGNIFICANT.>>AFTER A GOOD RAIN WHEN IT’S NICE AND SOFT, THEY’LL COME OUT HERE AND ROOT IT ALL UP. THESE ARE PRETTY MINOR.>>HOG HUNTERS, LIKE PHILLIP KOGER, HAVE SEEN IT ALL.>>ONCE THEY DO THIS, IT TURNS THE ROOTS UP AND IT DOESN’T GROW BACK.>>HELPING PREVENT DAMAGE TO PASTURES, CROPS, AND FENCES IS PART OF THE APPEAL FOR PHILLIP…>>CAN SEE WHERE THEY’VE TORN THIS FENCE UP, COMING THROUGH. TEAR UP YOUR FENCE, THEN YOUR COWS GET OUT, THEN YOU’VE GOT ANOTHER SITUATION.>>…BUT PURSUING PIGS ISN’T JUST DAMAGE CONTROL.>>STOP ‘EM ALONG HERE.>>THE THING THAT’S NICE ABOUT HUNTING HOGS IS THAT YOU CAN DO IT YEAR-ROUND. THEY’RE GOOD ON THE TABLE, THERE’S NO BAG LIMIT, SO IT’S NOT LIKE YOU GET ONE AND YOU’RE DONE FOR THE YEAR. THEY’RE A WORTHY ADVERSARY.>>ON THIS PARTICULAR MORNING, THE ADVERSARY REMAINS HIDDEN, WHILE PLENTY OF DEER TAKE THE BAIT.>>WRONG SPECIES.>>BUT BY EVENING, IN THE PASTURE NEARBY, PHILLIP SEES A HOG.>>OKAY, I’M GONNA TAKE A SHOT. (rifle shot) THAT’S A DEAD HOG. (music)>>PHILLIP ESTIMATES HE HAS TAKEN TWO TO THREE DOZEN FERAL HOGS FROM THIS PROPERTY, ONE TIPPING THE SCALES AT 265 POUNDS.>>THAT’S A BIG HOG. THEY DON’T HAVE ANY NATURAL PREDATORS, OTHER THAN ME.>>THAT MEANS FARMERS AND RANCHERS NEED ALL THE HELP THEY CAN GET.>>THEY JUST WANT THEM GONE. I’VE GOT ABOUT THREE OR FOUR OTHER PROPERTIES I HUNT ON WITH DIFFERENT OWNERS AND THEY ALL FEEL ABOUT THE SAME WAY. A FEMALE CAN HAVE THREE LITTERS A YEAR, AND IF HALF OF THOSE ARE FEMALES, IT GETS EXPONENTIAL. THEY CAN DO SOME SERIOUS DAMAGE OVERNIGHT. (camera clicks)>>EVEN DEDICATED HUNTERS DON’T BELIEVE THEY ALONE CAN OVERCOME THE AMAZING ABILITY OF HOGS TO REPRODUCE. (hog grunt)>>THEY SAY THERE’S TWO KIND OF COUNTIES IN TEXAS, THOSE WITH A HOG PROBLEM AND THOSE THAT ARE ABOUT TO HAVE A HOG PROBLEM. AND UH, CENTRAL TEXAS HAS A HOG PROBLEM. IT DOESN’T HURT, BUT WE’RE NOT GOING TO ERADICATE THEM, HUNTING THEM. NOT WITH TRAPPING OR TRADITIONAL HUNTING.>>ALTHOUGH TRAPPING CAN BE SUCCESSFUL ON A LOCAL LEVEL, UH IT DOESN’T REALLY HAVE VERY WIDE IMPACTS. (pig grunt)>>AND THAT IS WHY THE RESEARCH BEING DONE AT THE KERR MANAGEMENT AREA COULD BE SO IMPORTANT.>>LET’S GO, PIGS. (clapping) NATIONWIDE AND INTERNATIONALLY THERE ARE LOTS OF PEOPLE WORKING ON THIS TOPIC. AND WE ARE VERY OPTIMISTIC.>>READY FOR PIG NUMBER TWO?>>YES.>>WHEN WE PUT THEM IN THAT PEN…>>SEND THAT ONE TO PEN 21.>>…WE TRY TO WORK THEM AS EFFICIENTLY AS WE CAN TO REDUCE STRESS ON THE ANIMALS. (pig grunt) OUR TECHNICIANS HAVE COME UP WITH A WAY TO WORK THESE HOGS INDIVIDUALLY.>>THE ANIMALS ARE SEPARATED INTO DIFFERENT RESEARCH GROUPS.>>HE STAYS HERE.>>TO IDENTIFY THEM, SOME ARE ALSO MARKED WITH A NON-TOXIC PAINT.>>GIVE ME AN X ON THAT FRONT ONE. IT CAN BE QUITE A RODEO AT TIMES. (pig snaps)>>OOOOH.>>HOW ABOUT A “Y”?>>WE’RE MARKING THESE HOGS SO THAT WE CAN DETERMINE WHICH HOGS ARE AT WHICH FEEDER AND FOR HOW LONG. (pig snaps)>>TO DANIEL’S CREDIT IT IS KIND OF HARD TO PAINT ‘EM WHEN THEY’RE FIXING TO SNAP YOUR ARM IN TWO. (clapping) (squeal)>>WHETHER IT BE A PLACEBO BAIT OR AN ACTUAL TOXIC BAIT, THE IDENTIFICATION OF THOSE INDIVIDUAL PIGS HELPS US TO EXPLAIN THE EFFECT OF OUR TREATMENTS.>>RIGHT NOW WE’RE ENTERING INTO SOME TASTE TRIALS, BASICALLY TO SEE IF THIS IS SOMETHING THAT THOSE HOGS WILL READILY EAT. (opening and pouring feed) WE HAVE REMOTE CAMERAS SET UP, SO AS THEY COME INTO THOSE FEEDING AREAS, THOSE CAMERAS BEGIN TO TAKE PICTURES.>>IT ALLOWS US TO GET SOME SLEEP AT NIGHT, BUT IT ALSO ALLOWS US TO SAMPLE THOSE PIGS IN MORE OF A NATURAL SETTING. THERE SHOULD BE A STRONG CORRELATION BETWEEN THE AMOUNT OF TIME SPEND CONSUMING THE BAIT AND A LETHAL EFFECT.>>IN MANY WAYS, THE ACTIVE INGREDIENT BEING TESTED APPEARS IDEAL.>>INTOXICATION BY SODIUM NITRITE WOULD BE CONSIDERED CLINICALLY HUMANE. THERE’S NOT LOTS OF VOCALIZATION, IT’S VERY RAPID, SUB-LETHAL DOSES DON’T REALLY APPEAR TO HAVE ANY LONG-TERM EFFECTS.>>THE INGREDIENT IS ALSO INEXPENSIVE, AND HARMLESS ENOUGH TO HUMANS TO BE USED AS A FOOD PRESERVATIVE. BUT AT HIGH DOSES, IT BLOCKS THE UPTAKE OF OXYGEN IN THE BLOODSTREAM TO LETHAL EFFECT. SO FINDING A WAY TO DELIVER IT ONLY TO PIGS IS ALSO PART OF THE STUDY.>>TARGET-SPECIFIC DELIVERY IS WHAT WE’RE TRYING TO ACHIEVE WHENEVER WE’RE DELIVERING A TOXIC BAIT. THE HOG HOPPER KEYS ON THE NATURAL ROOTING BEHAVIOR OF THE FERAL PIG BY USING A VERTICAL SLIDING DOOR. AT THE SAME TIME THE WEIGHT OF THE DOOR LIMIT OTHER NON-TARGET SPECIES FROM ACCESS. THIS PROJECT HAS LOTS OF COLLABORATORS, THE TEXAS DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE, THE USDA, OUR COUNTERPARTS IN AUSTRALIA.>>THE RESEARCH CONTINUES, WITH THE HOPE THAT, IN YEARS TO COME, IT WILL PROVIDE A NEW MEANS OF CONTROLLING FERAL PIGS; MORE EFFICIENTLY AND AFFORDABLY THAN EVER.>>TRAPPING FERAL PIGS CONSUMES A LOT OF TIME. FLYING A HELICOPTER IS VERY EXPENSIVE. THAT IS THE ULTIMATE GOAL, FOR PRIVATE LANDOWNERS AND RESOURCE MANAGERS TO HAVE ACCESS TO ANOTHER TOOL IN THE TOOLBOX.>>REGARDLESS OF RESEARCH OUTCOMES, HUNTERS AREN’T LIKELY TO RUN OUT OF LANDOWNERS LOOKING FOR HELP CONTROLLING WILD HOGS.>>THE WILD PIG IS CERTAINLY HERE TO STAY.>>SO FOLKS LIKE PHILLIP CONTINUE TO DO WHAT THEY CAN, ONE HUNT AND ONE BARBEQUE AT A TIME.>>IT’S A LOT MORE FUN THAN GOING TO THE GROCERY STORE. YOU ALWAYS HAVE LOTS OF FRIENDS. NOT SO MUCH WHEN IT COMES TIME TO CLEAN THEM, BUT WHEN IT COMES TIME TO PULL THEM OFF THE SMOKER. THERE’S LOTS OF PEOPLE WHO’LL SHOW UP THEN.

  1. Please note that target-specific delivery and impacts to native species are part of the research. Results indicate that specialized feeders work and scavenging of affected carcasses is unlikely to produce harmful effects. Pesticides must be registered by the EPA for legal use, and this requires the science to demonstrate that prescribed use of baits would not threaten human safety or ecosystem health. Reducing feral hog damage to the ecosystem is the ultimate goal of this ongoing research.

  2. poison won't work,too dangerous to other species,including humans,
would you it pork if you thought it might have been poisoned,
    shoot them…….

  3. Please don’t RUINS the feral HOGS, just pack them ALIVE and send in the Philippine mountain ranges and we keep them live there.
    Yeah!

  4. Have they tried sterilizing the alpha males?
In the beginning it states that they spread disease. Anything dangerous to eating them?

  5. Are there concerns about the uncertainty of the result of consuming hoggone on different pigs? Suppose  the farmer later shoots  a pig that had earlier ingested a "sub lethal" dose, is that pig then used for food? How would the farmer know that the pig had consumed a sub lethal dose after shooting it, and possibly before eating it?

  6. It is a perfect way to feed people around the world that have no food, i know ranchers want them gone i get it i worked on a big Ranch in central Florida tons of Hogs, just saying it's a lot of food that is being wasted!

  7. We wiped out the Buffalo with guns why not let folks pay to shoot them for a meat draw but make it affordable

  8. I’d like to see 2 things happen. 1st, Harvest the food for hungry. 2nd, use the military to practice there marksman skills but only on federal land or farmers land that gives written permission with where, when, how many can hunt and any additional restrictions the farmers want. Why not let the military hone there skills, learn the use of there weapons and accessories (ie nite vision).

  9. You can't poison only one species. Take all the money out of toxicant research and put it into bounties and subsidizing Hunters for the hungry. I primarily hunt deer and turkeys but take a pig any time I get a chance. We need to encourage hunting as much as possible before pursuing toxins

  10. Why poison the hogs? The government can harvest the hogs and process these and sell as organic pork.

  11. Why do they charge so much to get rid of them? Hope they don't get ate alive. You know we'd come help get rid of them, but I'm not paying more than I can buy one in a sale barn.

  12. One of my Dad's friends was showing us the damage hogs had done to his property. He had a large area that he would charge people to hunt deer. He only had doe permits. He thought he would charge us the same price to hunt those hogs. I told I'm not paying you to come hunt hogs when I can go to my Uncle's and hunt them for free. About 2 weeks later he called daddy said tell your kids they can come hunt hogs for free. It's crazy how much they want to charge you to come help them with their hog problem. I guess he found out no one was going to pay him to hunt hogs. Theirs to many farmers around here that will let you hunt for free.

  13. Have a hunting club get a massive hunt together and collect meat for the homeless shelters. They could invite people from all over the country to pitch in or purchase a hog for meat as a donation.

  14. This is what happens when u get rid of Mexican s there's not enough hogs for the tamales bring back the Mexicans you'll get rid of the feral s and you'll get fat this Christmas

  15. You need to talk to the Cajuns.
Catch the boars make them bars.
Then you leave them for a year. Mark them and let them soften up.
Hunt them down and eat them.

  16. Didn't hear if a human would catch something or die after it eat that .im Speaking as hog hunter .you should eat hog meat when it doesn't die from eating a dose of them pellets and doesn't die.

  17. Why not BIRTH CONTROL!!?? They eat yams…so ya get the one’s from MEXICO…they found out about those in the 60’s and isolated the birth control compounds in them…feed them to the pigs and see if that works.

  18. Amazing! We take EVERYTHING to the brink and yet something we don’t want…we can’t? What? I’ll help for pay!

  19. Considering the feedback given here I would say there are better ways of getting rid of Hogs than just Poisoning them. Consider the poisoned Pigs as food for the other animals and that will probably result in very negative side effects. Think of DDT and what that did, because we didn´t know. And saying we do know everything is just admitting that you didn´t pay attention to the different biological History lessons we had. I think there are worse cases than Leadpoisoning ( If you didn´t get that joke, shoot them) Hunt them down, Use them as the new meat baken for the rich or the poor. Trap them, outsmart them. Considering what I have seen on youtube, these animals are smart. Even if you did poison them, they might find out and where are we than ? 😛
Also a good response was, Put a bounty on them. Free hunting everywhere etc etc. If you want to get rid of an animal, let humans invent. And they sure don´t need poison. The animal will go extinct.

    Have a great eavning

  20. Found a place about an hour outside of Austin Texas that allows you hunt these killer hogs, BUT they charge you……WTF?!?!? They should be paying YOU to hunt them!!!

  21. Glad the new law for feral hogs is in action. they are devastating our lands, our crops!!!Now they're Saturday night dinner.

  22. With all the people that are homeless and hungry, this is a resource just waiting to be harvested. Charge sportsmen a permit to hunt them and send those proceeds to the homeless and the hides to shoe and clothing for the same. Justice here for all. oh yeah we import WAY to many pork products from guess who ? C|-|i||/-! Kill a bunch of birds for one hog…XD

  23. That's funny I cant find a place in Texas to hunt hogs for less than $600, there obviously is no issue with population control or damage or the ranchers would be calling me. Prove me wrong and will show up to help control the problem.

  24. they must not have such a big problem if they are more interested in the $$$$$ I was thinking of going there but, I'm not going to go now! They should have a bounty on the hogs and not be charing you to hunt them. They can solve their own problem then.

  25. What is bad about it is many supposed gun owners and hunters always brag about how they would love to hunt but do not want to pay any fees then when I say, Hey you can hunt with me any day of the year for free just bring a rifle some ammo and be prepared to stay up all night to help me kill them hogs
Plus you need to be able to hit an 8 inch target from 100 yards on the first shot to qualify for the hunt and all I hear are crickets chirping after that with not one single reply

  26. "Hunting and trapping alone aren't the solution" – Seems to be the rest of the solution would be some seasoned oak and apple wood, a good sized smoker, and a few gallons of BBQ sauce. I'm partial to a concoction of garlic, ginger, sriracha, and a nice porter or stout.

  27. Thinking about 'harvesting' hogs and eating them ? Have a read about HYDATID CYST first, before you do. The 'food' must be cooked at a HIGH temperature for a LONG time to make it safe to eat.

  28. From what I gather from these comments ,is that the damage that these hogs are allegedly causing is not as bad as indicated….pay to hunt a wild pig ?….greed, pure n simple

  29. If they say people are hungry , why don't you people just let some sinper from the army get some practice and shoot them wild hogs , then cure them from any parasite and feed the poor or sell them on the open market or send the meat to country that need food .

  30. Do you let the public hunt them free of charge year round, on all public land, with no limit on the number of hunters or pigs killed? If not why not? I know they don't in the State of Georgia on Ossabaw island. You know, the old lies like "hunters will never get them all" or "we can't possibly manage and control that many hunters". Hunters may not get them all, but one government guy with a rifle can kill 700 per year. He will never get them all either, but at least you guys can keep that gravy rolling in. More money, more studies, more helicopters, more control. We know.

  31. Where can a guy get a chance to take some at a reasonable price? I live in North West Arkansas and would like to take about five at one hunt.

  32. Just call in Pablo and his cousins, all of them, and you will no longer have pig problems. Make sure they should take them to different towns in mexico.

  33. So you think it's better to poison them, along with other native species, who will undoubtedly end up on the dinner tables of humans???? How do you claim you can prevent that? Great plan! Even IF only pigs were poisoned, it is a 100% certainty that some would escape the immediate area, be hunted elsewhere, and end up poisoning whichever unfortunate people that end up eating them. Great plan………. if you're a supporter of eugenics. Get your heads out of your asses. Really. Or will you consider however many associated human deaths/sicknesses an "acceptable" compromise??? WAKE UP!!!!!!

  34. This could be a blessing in disguise with lots of good meat there. There should be plenty to go around especially for financially disadvantaged people. In other words, no one should be starving if this is handled correctly. There will be complaints from the meat producing industry, but we're talking about a humanitarian effort here which should supercede profits. If feeding poor people causes a new economic normal, so be it.
I haven't hunted in a long time and I'm totally out of shape with CAD, but place me in a good spot and I'd love to help feed some people. My .30-30 lever is fast and my .30-06 bolt is a tack driver.
Maybe someday when I move South.

  35. The problem lies with the land owners themselves they dont let people hunt on their lands and if they do they charge alot of money. 99% of the land in texas is privately owned and there needs to be more public lands that everybody who wants to hunt hogs can do so. Strictly managed of course

  36. Animal pesticides are not the answer for an over abundance of a food source for humans. There are people starving and they are looking into poisoning a food source their is no shortage of. Someone is thinking dumb *uck thoughts. How about make each of states with lotteries use 10% to pay people to hunt hogs. Pack them in ice and ship them to butchers in areas where they can be processed and sold to people on EBT. Yes, do not let EBT shoppers buy farmed pigs.

I am 53 and I have camping gear, two F-250 trucks, three 30-06 rifles and two 243 rifles and all the gear needed to hunt. I live in North Florida, am retired and love to drive. If states were to pay our family of four, we would hunt 24/7-365 all over the USA. There are millions of retired people who are hunters with all the gear to do the same thing and would do it full time with great joy. Even after all our expense, if we each only make minimum wage, it would still be worth it.

We would be able to wake up every day in the most beautiful nation on earth out in nature. Healthcare would have to be provided but we do not need wasteful health insurance, just give us a Medi-Visa to pay doctor visits with and pay for medication and med related supplies. My wife has one and it gets $2,000 on it each year from her company. Negotiate with doctors to give these hunters a doctors visit for $50 or an emergency room visit for $100 and that will keep it simple. Many pharmacies have a clinic Nurse or First Aide staff member and rotational doctors now near where we live, so a doctors office is usually not needed.

Hunt edible food sources. Poisoning them will lead to other species being poisoned also.

  37. Poisoning is not a solution! There is too many variables that can make poisoning a disaster. We don't need more toxins in our environment and our waterways. People love to hunt hogs. Let them hunt. I'd fire every one of those "scientists" that mention poison as a solution.

  38. They dont really want the problem to go away. Too many people are making money now. Let them make their money. Allow hunting all year. No limits. People have the chance to go hunt something anytime they want. Good eating if prepared right. Give the rest to poor folks. I'm not seeing the problem here.

  39. Issue discussed local with TPW is the bait kills indiscriminately other than the target animal, the hog, including deer. More research is needed before this is widespread

  40. Food presevitive?Poisons hog?One dose does the job?
How about the small doses consumed by humans?Over a life time?
Can you say BIO-ACCUMALATE? Sure I knew ya could :/

  41. They charge you to help with their hog problem because you are dumb. STOP PAYING TO HUNT FERAL HOGS! It should be free and it should be appreciated by all negatively impacted by these demon pigs.
