How to Homework: Top 10 Tips for ADHD Success


Hello Brains! For many ADHD brains and the hearts who love them, homework can be a nightly battle. *Child wailing and crying* Don’t worry. I’m here to help and I brought reinforcements Homework is one of the biggest challenges for those of us with ADHD. It’s not that we aren’t smart or can’t do it. It’s because honestly, we’re interest-based learners. Unless it’s an assignment or subject we’re really excited about, homework usually isn’t stimulating enough to our brains for us to be able to focus on it. Even if we try. Even if we try harder. Because homework isn’t stimulating enough, our brains tend to wander all over the room and usually find something more exciting to focus on. So how do we get our ADHD brains to focus for long enough to finish that homework? How do we win this nightly battle? Simple math — if homework isn’t stimulating enough on its own, maybe we need to add something to the homework equation to help us get it done. This week I partnered with Nobel Coaching, who provides adhd-friendly online coaching and tutoring, to bring you ten homework tips that can help you find a homework equation that works for your brain. These tips were suggested by one of their amazing coaches Ana. And because the research I do for this channel is basically like the adult version of homework I decided to try them out. Ready? Let the battle begin. 1. Create a study space. Don’t do your homework where other people might distract you. Find your place, your corner where you can organize your space and turn it into homework headquarters. Too boring. It doesn’t have to be, make it your own. Ask yourself, if I could make this a fun place to study, what would I need to change about it? What would make it more fun to look at? What helps me focus? What kind of supplies do I need? Think of places you like to work and try to make your space feel more like that. Like cuddling up on the sofa? Put a pillow behind you and keep a cozy blanket nearby. Like studying in the park? Put a plant near your desk and open the window so you can feel the breeze… or not. Pick out comfortable clothes, especially for studying. Study slippers? Study glasses? Study hat? Set up special homework music, lighting, or whatever helps you get in the mood. Put motivational quotes on the wall. This place should remind you of what you’re supposed to be doing when you’re actually there. 2. Challenge yourself. Set a goal you want to achieve. It doesn’t have to be a long-term goal It can be a daily goal such as solving 15 math problems in less than two hours. But watch out! Do not set unrealistic expectations. Try to estimate how long it would normally take based on the assignment and how fast you usually work and just slightly increase the pressure. For some ADHD brains, competing with themselves is exciting enough, but if that doesn’t work… 3. Create some accountability. it’s easier to stay on track when somebody will notice if you don’t, so do your daily challenges with a classmate. Find a supportive friend who can cheer you on when you succeed. Sticker charts work really great too. 4. Break it… into smaller pieces. Just like you wouldn’t grab a whole pizza and start eating it from one side, it’s probably not a good idea to tackle a whole project all at once. Before you start, divide it into smaller doable pieces. This will help you get a better idea of how long it’ll take for you to finish it, and allow you to set mini deadlines for each piece. Hey, more stickers! 5. Add some movement. Adhd brains work best when they’re allowed to move. Try using a fidget while you do math. Pace around the room while you read. Or take a short dance break between assignments. This will release neurotransmitters in your brain that can actually help you focus. Dance party! 6. Find a study buddy. Studying with someone else adds accountability and it’s more fun. Apps like these can make great study buddies on their own, or you can use them with friends. If your study buddy needs to study something else, that works too. Just having someone in the room can help you stay focused. Just make sure they’re actually there to study. 7. Reward yourself for your effort. Sometimes it feels like nothing in the world would make homework easier or more fun. It can help to think of ways to reward yourself after you’re done. Make it something that you really like, so you’ll actually want to earn it. What’s important is not to have your reward accessible at all times. Your parents can help with this —
maybe you can ask them to hang on to your iPad until you’ve earned your stickers for the day, or remind you when it’s time to start working so you’ll be able to earn them. This is a great way for them to help you stay focused without feeling like they’re pressuring you. 8. Create a homework tracking system. Battle plan. Plan of attack. Sometimes it can feel like we have so much more work than we actually do Writing all of the assignments down can help you see how much there really is so you can figure out how to get it all done. Once it’s down on paper, you won’t have to hold it all in your head. So it’s a lot less overwhelming trying to keep track of it all. Bonus: you get to cross things out. Pick a planner you really like so you’re more likely to use it. Some people like notebooks, some people like apps. Use whatever works for you. 9. Don’t be afraid to mix it up. If it’s hard for you to stick to one subject, don’t. Try switching back and forth between two or three, just make sure the subjects are significantly different. For example, you can combine Math and English, but combining American history and European history might get a bit confusing. If you only need to work on one subject, maybe mix it up with 10-minute breaks where you do something else, like color or play an instrument. Do what you like. Breaks are important too. Speaking of which,… 10. Respect your downtime. When you have a lot of homework, projects, exams you should be studying for, you can fall into the trap of feeling bad when you’re resting because you know there’s always something you should be doing. But taking breaks is part of the process. It helps your brain remember what you’ve learned, so it’s important to respect your rest time as much as you respect your study time. There you go. Battle won. Of course, the homework equation that works can be different from student to student, and even day to day. So a lot of this is a process of trial and error. Let go of your expectations just give some of these tips a shot, and see if they help. If the battle continues, it might be a good idea to get evaluated for learning disabilities Dyslexia, for example, is super common in ADHD brains. Or look into accommodations your school can provide.   2. Hey, my mom taught me several of these from a young age! I guess that’s why I didn’t struggle much in school until I was out of high school.

    I’ve found listening to some kind of music I don’t really care much about (dubstep or EDM or instrumental) gives the part of my brain that wants to wander something to think about without completely distracting me.

  3. In college when I get a project, I write a sticky note with what class it's for, when it's due, how long it needs to be, etc and stick it to my desk. Finishing a project and getting to crumple up that sticky note is SO SATISFYING.

  4. When I get stuck writing a paper, I skip to the end and do my citations. It gives my brain a chance to focus on something else and means I'm less likely to forget to do them. Another trick is to reread my essay and write notes and questions on things I've already talked about that I can expand on and connect to other things I want to talk about.
    Citation tips: grab the info you need for your citations and pull quotes (including page numbers) as you're doing your research, so you don't have to go back and find it later. I keep a separate document of all the quotes I think I might possibly use, so that way I don't have to find the quote in the book again, I can just use the search function on my list of quotes.

  5. It's okay to ask the teacher for help. In high school and college I frequently asked the teacher "I'm thinking of doing my project/paper on this, would that fit the assignment?" They'll probably be overjoyed to help you find a topic you're interested in and can usually point you towards good resources.

  6. It took me until college to learn that you're allowed to get outside help on homework. It's not a test. It's not the teacher looking to see how much you remember from class, it's more practice so you hopefully remember how to do/understand the thing.

  7. I have ADHD and I'm a really bad perfectionist, which do not mix! I feel I need to be organized all the time, but I'm not really good at organizing!

  12. I had to play tv in the background when I was a kid to do homework. I will watch the shows that I like and did my homework during a boring show or something I had already seen. Except it took me too long to finish homework lol.

  18. I am so thankful that I found this channel. I have had ADHD my whole life. Just recently I decided to go to medication, however, (maybe because it is a low does) I still feel my brain wonder. I realized bright colours, having my favourit playlist, posters, truly helps

  19. LEGIT a lot of this stuff I started doing without thinking about the possibility of it being bc of adhd. I also always describe that to study, I need absolutely no distractions and need to be fully immersed. (To read a whole book thoroughly, I need an audio book, the book in my hands (and close to my face) and be taking notes in a notebook all at once. I neeeed to be engages, otherwise I just typically find it super super difficult to continue with it. Oof!) My Mother had always suspected that my brother is on the adhd spectrum but not me particularly, since she tends to equate it with being able to have good grades (ofc that's not necessarily true though. and also she hasn't seen my grades in years lollllllllll). I haven't consulted a doctor whatsoever but I have tendencies that resonate with a lot of your videos. Time and time again, even if I forget about my growing suspicion for a while, I come back to the idea that I might have undiagnosed ADHD. I really really struggle with this but it would definitely help to get more insight… at this point in my life (21!) it's less of a "maybe it's just something going on with my life" and more of "well, everything's alright but wow this is hard to do" and not just depression anymore. Anywho, thank you for your videos. my friends referenced me to you and so far, ADHD or not these tips are helping me so much (also like… I thought everyone had to do things like this to concentrate? I've been giving similar study tips to students while tutoring since it's what I have to do to get anyyyything done. wild.)

  20. I don't know if any one will see this comment, but I realized that I was in a situation at 6:02 .
    Even though I didn't have a duty right now, I was always bored, and worst of all, I couldn't tell why I was bored. After the video I realized I had to have some fun and take a break while doing business. As someone with ADHD, this kind of videos takes people from "-" to "+". I'm back to life right now and I feel like I can look after my business after a good game break, you really help people, thank you very much.
    Edit: I did and it worked on me.

As someone with adhd I need a visual reminder or outline so I remember this stuff at the end /after watching the video … I watched wall of aweful and how to break through it like 10times and still can’t remember the tips — is the message typed up/written out anywhere that I can supplement this awesome video with it so I can take the message with me?

  22. I feel like an intruder. I dont have ADHD but i cant focus on my revision because i'm bored (constantly). I've tried 7/10 of these ,and listening to background noise, before the video and its still difficult to study. Im about to try crossing out…GOOD LUCK to all of you especially if you're doing GCSE's.

  25. With the 4’th one that would be useful BUT….. how my homework is set up doesn’t work like that. Well we have Collums of problems to solve one for Monday and Tuesday and wed and Thur and that’s it. BUT the work in each column still feels like to much

  26. I love this video so much. The tips are great and the little demo videos are funny and charming. Homework was always a big stress for me at school and now I work in a school I don't want to join the enemy side! 🙂
    I think I can help students I support (some of whom have ADHD) if I use positive challenges and maybe put in some of these tips, much better than telling them to just get it done or just try harder.

I hate adhd and I have it which people without it and my parents don’t understand how hard it is to just sit down and focus on something especially when it’s something you don’t like and it’s always getting me grounded and stuff because of how hard it is for me to just sit down and do homework but I’d just like to be able to do it normally and it took me three hours to copy like 13 sentences

  28. It's so annoying because I really value my education and I love the subjects I'm taking, but the slightest bit of difficulty or boredom makes my brain hate all forms of work and look for literally anything else to do.

    just in the last hour i've painted my nails, followed one of those 'back to school hairstyle' videos and started looking for dinner recipes even though it's only 2pm. whyyyyyyy

  29. I've found that if a task is incredibly monotonous and boring, I need to open like 12 different tabs with rain sounds, asmr, classical music and writing sounds playing at the same time to trick my brain into feeling stimulated lol

  32. i love my homework and am extremely interested in it. But i still get distracted and its gotten much harder since I started my PhD. All of my homework is on one subject and I spend all day on 1-3 things. My classes are also 3 hours longs. It’s a nightmare😭

  33. Am I the only person who “rewards” themselves for doing work with basic human nessassity? Like my reward for finishing this big project is to eat dinner. I’m taking my first study break in 6 hours to find this video to prove to myself that I can take a study breaks and like use the bathroom and still be a “real student”.

  34. Okay the vacuum on the couch got me LOL. I do feel like ppl in general can be totally inconsiderate though when someone is trying to do work or study. (I know places can't be totally quiet, obvs. But noises sometimes really get on my nerves.)

  36. As a kid, when ever my mind wandered off I actually started to count these small little pebble looking things all over the wall and Ceiling. (There are eaasy multiple thousends) Yeah the challange of trying that…and failing…was more interesting to me than homework x). Unleeesss it was history. God i loved it and even learned subjects in advance! English too later on as a Teen.

  38. I legit do yoga while reading text books. I don't have normal furniture in my room. I use an adjustable folding table and a bean bag instead of a chair.
