Project Success Class of 2019

(soft upbeat music) – Hello, my name is
Abyhgaell and I am a senior at the John D. O’Bryant School and an incoming freshman at UMASS Amherst. What excites me the most
about scientific research is the fact that it
tackles some of the biggest mysteries in our universe
and tries to explain them. And I find that really interesting. The character Juliette
from the Shatter Me series inspires me because she is a girl born with powerful abilities, but saw them as a flaw and hated herself for it. But as the series progresses, she learns to see her
abilities as a strength and becomes confident in herself. – Hi, my name is Connor. I’m a senior at NorthField
Mount Hermon School and next year I’ll be going
to Johns Hopkins University. What I enjoy most about research are the possibilities to be innovative. While doing research, I can connect ideas in art or in science to
make new discoveries. I look up to the character, Louise Banks, a linguist from the movie, Arrival. My immersing herself in a new language, she was able to prevent a world war. Even when people doubted her, and the world was at a point
of very, very high tension, she was able to discover new
ways of looking at the world. – Hi, my name is Phuong and I am a junior at Boston Latin School. What excites me the most
about science and research is the endless possibilities
that it allows. I think that it can be used as a tool for both curiosity and creativity. Someone who inspires me
the most is Emma Watson. She started out as a child actress from the movie Harry Potter, but now she’s known as a UN Ambassador. I think that it’s amazing how
she’s able to use her fame to address social justice
issues and make a change. – Hi, my name is Maria. I’m a recent graduate of Saint Joseph Preparatory High School,
and I will be attending Amherst College in the fall. What excites me most about science is that it fuels my curiosity. Science is a machine that
enables us to understand one another and also the world around us. A character that inspires me is Owen Meany from John Irving’s, A
Prayer for Owen Meany. Owen Meany knew what his vocation was and he did not run away from it. And that for me is very inspirational. – Hello, my name is Hubert,
a recent graduated senior from Boston Latin Academy. This upcoming fall I’ll
be attending Dartmouth. What is most exciting about
science research to me is how unpredictable it is. Through investigation,
an outcome can result that is completely unexpected, which is beneficial because
it leads to more questions. Through this struggle, humans can gain a better understanding of how things work, helping humanity move forward as a whole. Supreme Court Justice, Sonia Sotomayor, has been a person who
has always inspired me. Her story and her upbringing was something that resonated with me. She’s a child of Hispanic immigrants and grew up in a public housing
project in New York City. Despite all the disadvantages
she experienced, she was able to prevail and persevere. Her determination and
passion paved the path to becoming a highly regarded position, a Supreme Court Justice. – Hello, my name is Katya Moran, I am currently a junior
at John D. O’Bryant. What excites me the most about science is how versatile it is. Through science, we are able to learn more about to solve global challenges, to understanding more
about how the way we act on a daily basis is explainable. The scientist that most
inspires me is Ellen Ochoa. She is the first Hispanic astronaut and the first Latina in space. As a Latina myself, Ellen
Ochoa is an inspiration to understanding that even
if I wasn’t born here, I am capable of accomplishing my dreams. – Hello, my name is Darla
Castano and I recently graduated from the
Margarita Muniz Academy. This upcoming fall I will be
a freshman at UMASS Boston. What I like the most
about research and science is that I get to challenge
myself every day. Someone who inspires me
is the Puerto Rican actor, Esmeralda Santiago because
she was able to fight against stereotypes and be who she wanted to be. – [Announcer] For more
